To top off a great morning, we brought home a pound of the very freshest shrimp imaginable - netted on the spot! They were delicious!
We've been out on some fishy business lately. We had a great visit at Queen of Peace Parish and School in Mishawaka. We heard they had an aquaponics greenhouse up and running, and they extended great hospitality to us and explained the details of their system. Their fish grow in tanks alongside rafts where their vegetables grow. The fish and their by-products nourish the plants they're growing - and the lettuce they're growing looks terrific! Fr. Dan arranged our visit, and parishioners Mike and Mark told us about their experience running an aquaponics system during the past year. It was great to hear how aquaponics was used to teach students at their school about science. And exciting to learn how this greenhouse and all that's growing inside help teach their congregation to be good stewards and care for the earth. All that along with the benefits of eating the terrific fresh food that they raise! And then it was on to Northern Indiana Aquaproducts in Goshen to visit Vince and Kevin, co-owners. Tilapia and salt-water shrimp are what they grow, and it's clear these guys know their fish. Meeting up with other "fishy" people is always exciting, and we exchanged lots of great information. They were also interested in our venture because they have family members with autism, and they're excited to see us start-up. They agreed that aquaponics was a great fit for a business employing those with autism. So happy to get to know these two and their business.
